Katherine Smith has served her country for more than three decades. Most recently this Grand Bahama native served as President of the Senate of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, until she accepted this past December, the role as Managing Director of the Disaster Reconstruction Authority.

In the immediate aftermath of hurricane Dorian, a devasting category 5 storm and the worst natural disaster the island nation has ever suffered, Prime Minister of The Bahamas, the Most Honorable Dr. Hubert Minnis, requested that Smith serve as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Grand Bahama Coordinator. In this role, Smith helped to organize relief efforts to residents of Grand Bahama and coordinated the efforts of multiple Government Ministries and dozens of NGOs operating on the island.

In addition to her demonstrated commitment to public service, she has a diverse background with significant leadership experience in the private sector. She previously held senior management positions overseeing functions such as Public Relations and Marketing, Corporate Affairs, Human Resources and Training, Hotel Operations, and Business and Economic Development. Katherine previously served as the Managing Director of Beast Communications, a privately held firm specializing in public relations and marketing approaches, communication strategies, and organizational leadership. She serves as Fundraising Chairman of the Grand Bahama Children’s Home Committee in Freeport and is Founder and Chairman of the GirlCon Organization. The organization focuses on the mentoring of teenage girls and young women and lives by its mission to “advocate for, inspire and empower girls to be more with a vision to ensure “that every girl is valued and empowered to live a life without limits.”

An avid sportsperson and fierce competitor. Katherine is a Past President and Fast Pitch Chairman of the Grand Bahama Amateur Softball Association, former Secretary General of The Bahamas Softball Federation, and a former member of the Bahamas Ladies National Softball Team

She has a Master of Science Degree in Organizational Learning and Leadership (OLL) from Barry University, Miami, Florida and a Bachelor of Science in Management from DeVry University, Magna Cum Laude, Atlanta, Georgia.

She and her husband Godfrey T. Smith reside on Grand Bahama and the couple has three adult children and one grandchild.
