John Sifling has over 30 years experience as a maritime professional and has held executive level positions in both the public and private sectors.
A retired Coast Guard Commander, John devoted a career to the U.S. Coast Guard's Marine Safety program. He served in a variety of assignments including Commanding Officer of Marine Safety Office Juneau, and was Captain of the Port, Federal On Scene Coordinator, Officer in Charge of Marine Inspection, and Federal Maritime Security Coordinator for Southeast Alaska.
John has been an incident commander for multi-agency spill response and vessel salvage operations throughout the central Pacific and Southeast Alaska regions, including a 230 person unified command that successfully lightered 23,000 gallons of oil and removed the grounded Alaska Marine Highway ferry LeConte from a remote reef.
After retiring from the Coast Guard, John worked for nearly eight years as Vice President, Fleet Security and Company Security Officer at Princess Cruises. There, he was responsible for the security program of one of the largest cruise lines in the world, with a fleet of 18 ships carrying 1.7 million guests each year to more than 300 ports and destinations around the world.
During his tenure at Princess Cruises, John also served as Chairman of the Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) Security Committee, where he oversaw industry wide passenger, crew, and ship security initiatives and standards development including implementation of the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 (CVSSA).
John is the Principle of Broad Reach Maritime LLC, a consulting firm located in Pasadena, California. His areas of expertise include: port and ship operations, risk assessment, emergency management, strategic planning, policy development, spill management team support, education/training, exercise planning, regulatory agency coordination, audits/inspections, public affairs and expert witness.
John holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine Science from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Master of Science in Oceanography (Physical) from the University of Rhode Island.
