As could only be expected, Liz's journey into the cruise realm was an unconventional one. Upon leaving school she worked for a while on the beauty counters of several large department stores in South Wales. But ready for a change of scene and having always been musical and blessed with a tendency to show off, Liz then decided to embark on a career in music, travelling the world solo and working as a piano bar entertainer for more than 10 years. Ever the entrepreneur, it was during this time that she founded a small entertainment agency and began placing fellow piano bar entertainers on cruise ships.
It wasn't until she came to Iceland in 1997 and shortly thereafter qualified as a tour guide, that her career path took her from the entertainment industry and into tourism. She started guiding cruise passengers in the summer of 2000 and was smitten. In 2008 she was approached by Iceland's largest and longest running travel agency, Iceland Travel, and founded the company's highly successful cruise department. Her focus being on creating sustainable excursions that captured the destination's unique beauty, while developing press releases, social media strategies, and overseeing the successful operation of on-trend shore excursions in more than 12 ports.
Her fresh and innovative approach saw her garner a completely and highly successful new revenue stream – the 'Ice-en-Route' concept which partnered cruise lines with Icelandair, capturing US passengers embarking on cruises in Europe with pre or post stopovers in Iceland.
Well known as an industry powerhouse, her relentless determination and drive to place Iceland on the forefront as a choice European cruise destination has warranted her status as a resident industry thought leader. Among the prestigious awards bestowed upon Liz and her team during her time at Iceland Travel are Seatrade Insider's Innovative Shorex 2011, the Federation of European Tour Guides Fair Deal Tour 2012, and Seatrade Insider's Marketing Initiative 2010.
As a proactive member of the international cruise community Liz is known for developing notable initiatives such as 'The Professional Women in Cruise Forum', which is now a part of the yearly agenda for Seatrade.
Originally from Porthcawl in South Wales, Liz is married, has lived in Iceland for the last 19 years and has three children and three grand children. She also runs the independent cruise destination and shore excursion focused blog 'Shorexpert.com' in her spare time.
